A data silo is a collection of data that's created and/or controlled by a single department or business unit ─ or sometimes a few of them ─ but isolated from the rest of an organization. The problem? Data silos tend to grow unchecked. There often aren’t any guidelines regarding what to retain or for how long. Much of the data could be duplicates, flawed or useless. It gets continually backed up, taking up valuable storage space and eating up budgets.
